2015 – Remembering a Chichester champion of human rights
The 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp was marked with a tribute to John Abel Smith who, as a Member of Parliament for Midhurst and then Chichester from 1830 to 1868, played a key role in campaigning for religious rights and famously introduced to Parliament Nathan de Rothschild, the first Jewish MP.
The event, attended by a large number of school and university students alongside members of the community, too the form of a ceremony at his mausoleum in Chichester’s Portfield cemetery.
